The “Why” Factor

March 3rd, 2012

One of my annual traditions has always been the T in the Park music festival, held in the Scottish Highlands, and usually featuring the best Scottish and international indie and rock music. In the past, the main stage has been headlined by genuine musical superstars like The Who and REM, as well as showcasing the best local talent. In fact, previously the only negative thing I had to say about T in the Park was the lack of choice in the beer tent; because the whole event is sponsored by Tennents lager, their weak-as-piss produce is all you can buy – after queueing for half an hour in the rain, of course. As rip-offs go, it’s up there with the Enigin scam.

So I was excitedly awaiting the announcement of this year’s headline acts; until the first rumours started appearing on the internet. My first clue that 2012 wasn’t going to be a classic line-up was when the T in the Park website grandly announced that they had secured the services of The Stone Roses to headline the main stage on the Saturday night. The Stone Roses? I’m not even sure they’ll still be together in July! And besides, Ian Brown couldn’t carry a tune in his bucket at his peak and I hardly think he’s likely to have improved with age.

Unfortunately, the news has only got worse as the weeks and the announcements have gone on. Dance acts, girl groups and even an X-Factor contestant; hardly the artists you would expect to see on the poster for a usually rock and indie-heavy music event. The worst of it is that we don’t even get an X-Factor winner (not that I want to hear Leona Lewis ruin a Snow Patrol song live or Matt Cardle karaoke his way through a Biffy Clyro number); no, instead we get runner-up-turned TV presenter Olly Murs, mockneying his way through a set of reggae cover versions. Oh, I can’t wait for July to get here…
